Thirteen Rocks!- Oakland Bat Mitzvah Photographer

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

I had a blast photographing Sophie’s Bat Mitzvah.  The one thing that’s always choked me up at the few Bat/Bar/Binai Mitzvah’s that I’ve photographed is the display of love and support from families and from the synagogue communities.  The majority of the people in the room have worn the same shoes and understand how daunting, public speaking and undivided attention is for anyone, let alone a thirteen year old!  The words cited from the torah are words that have been cited from generation to generation for thousands of years.  It is all quite beautiful.

This Bat Mitzvah, however, was no ordinary affair.  It had the cultural fusion that only those of us who grew up in a big city can embrace.  She had henna done on her arm and hands, one grandmother prepared Persian Jeweled rice while the other, Baba (who flew in from Mexico,) prepared homemade baklava.  Sophie’s  Dad prepared some of the moistest and most beautiful breads that I’ve ever tasted (see photo) and while there was a Middle Eastern menu for the mature diners, there was also a taco bar for those with less experimental palettes.   Sophie said that she wanted to have an “Epic Party” and it certainly didn’t fall short!  Mazel Tov!  And enjoy this sneak peek!

I had the pleasure of photographing an adorable fairy princess of the forest this past weekend!  With lovely red locks and hot pink mary janes, she isn’t hard to spot!  The unseasonably warm and sunny February day made this little fairy and her family a joy to photograph.  Thank you Tim, Simone, and Lily for sharing your afternoon with me.  Enjoy this sneak peek!

Deceptively, Deliciously, Spring!

It’s beautiful outside and the herbs in my urban potted garden are fragrant and lush. My toddler’s Painted Lady caterpillars are gorging themselves and they’re just days away from becoming pupas. Fortunately my phone has continued to ring in the new year (I pray that it doesn’t stop) and what great weather for shooting! Photography By Kemmeo has a few new things happening this year. Last year, some may remember my holding a One Day Only event in our backyard. I set up a backdrop and reflectors and friends and neighbors are welcomed to just come by and have their photo taken. This event was spread by word of mouth and extended to my previous clients and it was a success. People were later e-mailed with a link to their photos with the option to buy and/or share it with family members.
Well 2011 is the year of the “Photo Party”. I have been invited to my first one which will be in March. It’s the same principal, someone phones and says they want to host a party. The host invites all of her friends who she thinks may be interested and prepares food and drinks for her guests. I take care of building a set and taking photos. I then e-mail a link to the images and la voila! A free mini-session with Kemmeo with the option to buy prints or digital images. While I’d love to tell you more about the one in March, these things are “invite only” events. But I invite anyone who may be interested to host their own. As a thank you, the host receives a free mini-session with a CD of her 10 favorite images and an 8×10 print. Call if you’d like to reserve a weekend.
In other news, I have joined the very selective ranks of the Wedding Photojournalist Association and the Artist Guild of the WPJA. I am thrilled to be among scores of national and international talent and I look forward to being inspired by other photojournalists and participating in their contests. I’ve been very relaxed about entering competitions in the past but this year Communication Arts, WPJA and the PDN Annual are officially on my radar. My mantra this year is to take photos as if my life depends on it . My goal is to blog (preferably with a new image every other week). It’s a goal, time will tell. Be well and Happy New Year to everyone!

Cheers!
